Synopsis

Meet Chet, the wise and lovable canine narrator of Dog on It, who works alongside Bernie, a down-on-his-luck private investigator. In this, their first adventure, Chet and Bernie investigate the disappearance of Madison, a teenage girl who may or may not have been kidnapped, but who has definitely gotten mixed up with some very unsavory characters. Their search for clues takes them into the desert to biker bars and other exotic locals, with Chet’s highly trained nose leading the way.

My Thoughts (Spoiler-Free)

This was such a unique little book. I’ve read my share of mystery books involving cats. Some are better than others. The cats’ actual involvement in the mystery often varies. But in this book, not only was the dog a big part of the story, he was the narrator of the story. Just that added a lot of humor and charm to the whole ordeal. Because otherwise, it is a simple, easy read without any complicated twists and turns, or even characters.

The plot itself is quite basic. A (possibly) kidnapped girl, a few generic bad guys, a little family drama, a potential love interest, nothing groundbreaking. The side characters are just there to fulfill a role and then aren’t heard from once it’s done. Quite run-of-the-mill, as a thriller. Cozy mysteries aren’t usually my go-to, but Chet makes all the difference.

If you ever wanted to see what it is like to be a dog, this is the book for you. Especially as, even in key moments of the story, Chet gets distracted by squirrels, constantly forgets what he’s doing, finds himself acting on his animal instincts without realizing. But then he also gets way closer to solving the actual mystery than his human, who has to catch slowly catch up. Through it all, Chet is a loveable narrator with his own little quirks and unique perspectives on things.
